Flavio Alves | USA | 2019 | 88 min | English and Spanish spoken | English subtitles | Drama

The 2019 SXSW Audience Award-winning feature film debut by Flavio Alves draws on Tina – a young Mexican trans woman’s – journey, as she and and her grandmother navigate life as undocumented immigrants in New York City. Offering thought-provoking commentary on both the joy of trans experiences and friendships, and the continued obstacles caused by intersecting social inequalities and transphobia.

Watch the trailer here.

While some might consider it a spoiler, we find it important to mention that towards the end of this film, a transgender character gets murdered. We try to not show this trope in our festival, because we believe it to be a violent representation that could invite more violence. However, with this film, we do think the overall story and film quality are wonderful and worth a place in our program.

Want to learn more about problematic, violent representation of transgender people in media? You can watch our panel, recorded in 2020 during Pride Amsterdam. You can find it on our YouTube.
